TheWriteDay

... for writers too busy to write

Writing is like everything else:
the more you do it the better you get.

Don't try to perfect as you go along, just get to the end of the damn thing.

Accept imperfections. Get it finished and then you can go back. If you try to polish every sentence there's a chance you'll never get past the first chapter
~ Iain Banks

  1. Just got back from my second Write Day. A lovely space to write in with lots of positive energy from people who are published writers to complete beginners. No distractions during the writing sessions but tea and cake and a lunchtime stroll mean it's sociable too. Thanks, Kate.

  2. I joined the Write Day for a one off all day Sunday writing session. I was given a warm welcome, cake galore and lashings of tea and coffee. An excellent and incredibly productive day that inspired me to become a member of the Write Day so i could use the studio to write in on a regular basis. Feel very fortunate to have such a good facility and group on my doorstep. That novel is getting that little bit closer to completion by the week.

  3. I came along for the first time this week and felt very welcome. I enjoyed the writing exercises at the beginning to help get us going, and also enjoyed being left in peace to get on with what I wanted to work on. I've never done a writing workshop before so it was a great introduction and the goals sheet helped me plan for the day. Kate brought some books for me to look at too. All in all, I left inspired and ready to sign up for a more regular commitment too. So, it's a good day for new writers as well as those already deep in the midst of projects and publishing.

  4. Another fantastic Write Day. It's great to a be in a friendly and supportive environment with other writers who just want to get words on the page. This time I "chatted" with my MC and discovered that she's more engaging in the first person than the third. Without the immersive experience that is the Write Day, I might not have realised this until half way through the first draft. Oh, and Kate's soup is delicious.

  5. First timer - thank you Geni for recommending and thank you Kate for orchestrating. I wrote more today in one hit than at any other time that I can recently remember - 3500 words in an almost continuous swoop. A beautiful calm space, friendly people, freedom from distraction - perfect. Stephanie

  6. Had a brilliant few days with the lovely Write Day crowd down at Rousdon. I do write some but also relaxed and had some great conversations.
Thanks again to Kate for organising and to all there for being so lovely to Renly, my dog, and making him welcome - and to Pipkin for coming too (Daphne's dog), and to all of you. Miss you X

  7. A great day yesterday – my fourth (I think). SO glad I discovered the group. Lots of developments were made re one character in my novel – having had the time to play... The coffee, cake, soup and a lovely sunny, chatty walk all helped as well.Thank-you!

  8. So if you haven't heard about the magic that happens on a Write Day I am a little reluctant to promote it given that sessions are booking out far too quickly for my liking.
That said I have been attending for at least a year and a half, and in that time I have been inspired to write an animation series, stand up material, and explore other writing ideas in the most conducive atmosphere. I think It's something in the soup...

  9. Another brilliant Write Day. I get so much done on these days that it inspires me to push myself further when I'm writing at home. It's great to be in a room with like-minded people who just want to write. Thanks to Kate for organising this wonderful event - and for her delicious soup!

  10. Amazing Day! My first time at The Write Day. Five hours of solid writing, with no interruptions (apart from wonderful soup, coffee and cake). A piece I'd been trying to write for ages came alive. Thank you. I will be back.

  11. I cannot rate this day highly enough. Kate has managed to provide the perfect space in which writers and aspiring writers like myself are able to take a break from their usual busy routines and just write. No unnecessary distractions, no obligatory readings, just lots of cake, soup and refreshments, like minded friendly people and the opportunity to spend a day pursuing your own creative endeavour. I have been twice and cannot believe how much progress I have made each time. Thank you Kate - I look forward to this day each month. x

  14. Thanks Kate for organising a perfect weekend at The Lighthouse. Wonderful relaxing venue, some great laughs in mad company and it's got me writing again. No crits whatsoever. You hit just the right note

  15. TWD has a magical formula that just works for me. Silence filled with the tapping of keyboards and scratches of pen on paper, space and freedom to think while surrounded by other writers. Working on a novel project that's been ongoing for years now, I've made leaps of progress that simply wouldn't have been possible without the dedicated space and intense bursts of creativity that I get at TWD. Add to that the chance to meet other writers, sharing exciting progress or sympathetic commiserations about the trials of long-term writing, and TWD has become an absolutely essential part of my writing life.

I'm so thankful that I picked up a flyer during a visit to Frome. I live over an hour's drive from the town, but it's well worth it every time. At the end of each session I drive home through the beautiful Somerset countryside feeling rejuvenated and excited by what I've achieved.

Thanks to Kate and all the TWDers! I'm proud to be part of such a wonderful writing group!

  16. I had such a great day on Sunday (March 15th 2015) - very productive, plus excellent people, atmosphere and snacks! I look forwards to participating again in April.

  17. As a first timer to this, I wasn't sure what to expect and feared the dreaded writer's block as I typed away in an unfamiliar environment, surrounded by like-minded writers. I need not have worried, as sustained by lovely cake and soup, I managed to get 6000 words down by the end of the session and met some lovely new people!

As you know Kate, I only came for the cake! But I got a great day of writing too plus good company and some wonderful home-made soup. Good to be back after a long absence fighting the badger culls. Will definitely be back next month. Many thanks

  19. Sunday was great - I made a good few break-throughs in my novel planning and the wild writing really loosened me up. It was also wonderful to meet and to chat to other writers, drink warming winter soup, eat cake and walk around Frome. Thank you Kate!

  20. A great day again - so wonderful to be in a room full of people writing - the vibe was really good. Wild writing really works for everyone and is such a good way to 'limber up' See you all next month.

  21. Well yesterday, 9th November, was my first Write Day and what an inspiration. To be in a room filled with other writers doing thier stuff was great but what I couldnt' believe was how much I wrote and where my novel went. I had expected to write 5000 words and then get bored and had a couple of shorter ideas, and work stuff to do, but in the end I wrote over 7000 words and came home full of ideas to keep going.
I must say I also loved the wild writing and the walk with time to chat with others. I am so disappointed that my calendar doesn't give me space to come again until April but I will be there then.
Thank you Kate for organising this X

  22. Sunday was another good writing day, I got so much done. It is so good to have the time and space (and the @permission') to just WRITE! hanks to everyone for making it a great day.

  23. I always have a great time at The Write Day, and I always leave with a sense of achievement which lasts for days. It really is a great idea, beautifully executed by Kate.

  24. Happy 2nd birthday to The Write Day! As usual it was a great day - wonderful to have the space and quiet time away from all those things that help you procrastinate! Having the goals really concentrates the mind - I did the editing on one of my short stories and made some headway with the middle of another as planned so a really good day. Lunch as always was wonderful and it was great to have the opportunity to compare notes with others who write as it is such a solitary pursuit. It really helps when you realise you are not the only one to suffer the various blocks and difficulties. See you all next month, and keep writing!

  26. Thank you Kate for a fantastic day. I had been apprehensive about picking up where I'd left off a couple of years ago, but I got straight back into it and was extremely productive. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with some very pleasant like-minded folk. Couple that with the refreshments and venue = fabulous day!
    Looking forward to coming again!

  27. What a great day! I finally managed to get there and it was truly worth it. Being in a group of well motivated writers really kept me at it when I might have given up after my usual 2 hrs. I really enjoyed the way the day was set up and punctuated with appropriate breaks and refreshments. That really helped and going for the group walk was very pleasant. I even discovered parts of Frome I never knew before! I have to mention the amazing soup which was outstanding! Recipe Kate? I actually achieved exactly what I set out to do and now feel rested, calm and ready to continue thanks to all of you lovely people.

  28. Kate - another great day of writing, you could feel the creative vibe! It is such a luxury to have a whole day to write, away from all those distractions (ironing, gardening etc.) that give us the excuse not to write - no procratinating at TWD. And as a bonus we get your lovely soup and cakes! See you in September.

(Posted on 2014-07-20 17:51:00 by Sue)
  29. Kate - what a wonderful day, thank you so much (great cake and soup too!) Lovely writers, a bright quiet space and no distractions so no excuse not to just get on with it and write! See you next month. Sue B

  30. I am so glad I have found this group. Everyone was really friendly, relaxed and welcoming. I managed to write so much, because there were no distractions and the atmosphere was perfect. The cake/coffee/soup were delicious and a welcome break from the writing.

Even the walk after lunch was very pleasant and relaxing. Will definitely come again! - Thanks Kate for all the extra special touches you make.

  31. Thank you so much Kate for organising this group. I can honestly say that I have not ever before had as productive a writing day as I did on Sunday (15th December). It was nice to be part of a writing community too, and the soup was delicious. And the Goal sheet was helpful too! I exceeded my goals which was fabulous (and unusual!). Nicola

  32. If I didn't come to Frome for Kate's writing retreats, I'd get hardly any writing done. I get totally absorbed and the day goes by in a flash. Exhausted and happy after Sunday 20th October session

(Posted on 2013-10-21 22:46:00 by andy hamilton)
  33. Another excellent day and lunch with good company too. Kate's writing retreats seem to be the only time I get any new writing done these days. See you all next time?

(Posted on 2013-09-20 20:09:00 by andy hamilton)
  34. Well I must say being part of the first birthday was a lovely extra. That Kate is ia clever nurturer. Great atmosphere and snacks to keep an ieclectic bijou group of scribblers and tappers inspired for the whole day. Looking forward to the next one I can attend. Went home and brainstormed with my housemate about her graphic novel. Now she's inspired again too. Well done us. And thanks. (Stuff grammar)

  35. Got home from my 2nd WriteDay, exhausted but happy and well pleased with what I'd written. Thoroughly enjoyed both days, great company and conversation esp. during those wonderful lunches provided by Kate, as much tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes as anyone could possibly want, a great venue and a tranquil atmosphere in lovely Frome to write, write, write

  36. Thanks for a really great day last Sunday; it was so helpful to have the discipline of others around me writing - by the end of the day I was buzzing with ideas and went home feeling renewed and inspired. I hope to become a regular!

  37. Another great day yesterday, good food, good company and a great word total. Even the weather was on our side and our lunchtime stroll was clear, brisk and inspiring.

This day is a great idea for anyone - no matter how experienced - who needs a quiet and supportive space.

  38. Hello Kate and all today's team.
I had a fabulous day, got loads of writing done, and some thinking too. The food was delicious and the venue was just right - comfy, light and friendly. I'll be back in January.

  39. Hello to all the lovely people I met at the writing day today. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Really brilliant and useful too. Kate, the food, company and day were exactly what I'd hoped for - excellent. I shall be coming back. I'm going to add a link here (or should it be up there?) anyway, I thought I'd share it, it's Ray Bradbury giving a lecture to new writers. I love it. Once again, thanks to all of you and, in particular, Kate.

  41. Hi Kate, just wanted to add a comment to say how pleased I was to get so much writing done on the day. A full draft of a short story (just under 3000 words) from scratch seems impressive to me. A bit more interacting during the breaks would have been good but the day went just as it said on the tin. Cheers

  42. Many thanks for Sunday - I achieved so much more than I had hoped, let alone expected. My only problem now is keeping up the momentum and finishing the damn thing. It's older than my grandson now and he's been at school for more than a year!!
